Five HFL Teams Most Likely to Stop Stepping on Rakes This Season: Why the Brimstone Crownheads Top Hank Hellbound’s Annual List

By Hank Hellbound

BUCKLE YOUR SCALED CHINSTRAPS, sinners and sideline goblins! Hank Hellbound here, broadcasting from a press box made entirely of questionable officiating decisions, and today we’re counting down the five Hell Football League squads most likely to rise from last year’s flaming compost heap and become slightly less embarrassing.

Every season, some teams claw upward. Others discover new and spectacular ways to fumble into a lava moat. Improvement, friends, is not always about winning the Infernal Bowl. Sometimes it’s about going from “legally classified as a traffic cone” to “pesky in the fourth quarter.”

After reviewing the tape, consulting my crystal whistle, and yelling at several spreadsheets until they confessed, here are the five HFL teams ready to improve.

1. Brimstone Crownheads

The Crownheads lead the list because, frankly, they spent last season playing with the relaxed urgency of a cursed DMV line. And yet! Their foundation is molten gold. Quarterback Malachi “The Smoke Alarm” Cinders still has the arm of a siege cannon and the field vision of a hawk that owes money.

Their offense was already dangerous when it remembered the objective was “advance the ball” rather than “perform interpretive panic.” The big change? Protection. The Crownheads rebuilt the offensive line with three blockers who appear to understand that defenders should not be politely escorted into the quarterback’s ribcage.

Add in a defense that got younger, angrier, and significantly less flammable, and you’ve got a team that could jump from “disappointing” to “annoyingly inevitable” faster than a demon intern blaming the printer.

2. The Sulfur Bay Shipwrecks

Ah, the Shipwrecks. Last year they couldn’t close games if you handed them a lid, a manual, and divine intervention. They lost six contests by one score, most of them after inventing new penalties like “illegal vibes” and “taunting the concept of momentum.”

But regression works both ways, baby! Their secondary no longer resembles an open invitation, and rookie pass rusher Vex “Tax Audit” Grindle has been terrifying in camp. If their quarterback can reduce turnovers from “bakery grand opening” to merely “unfortunate,” Sulfur Bay could become a genuine nuisance.

3. The Ashpit Direwolves

The Direwolves were bad, but they were young-bad, not doomed-bad. There’s a difference. Doomed-bad is when your playbook is written in crayon and your coach claps after delay-of-game penalties. Young-bad is when everyone runs fast, hits hard, and occasionally forgets which end zone is theirs.

Running back Grakka Furnacehoof is a wrecking ball with cleats, and the defense added veteran linebacker Otho Bloodwhistle, who brings leadership, tackling, and the energy of a dad who found footprints on his freshly cursed lawn. Expect a leap.

4. The Screaming Bog Gargoyles

No team underperformed its talent quite like the Gargoyles, who entered last season with playoff buzz and exited it buried beneath a pile of blown coverages and haunted kicking woes. Their special teams unit was so cursed that even the curse filed a complaint.

Good news: they hired new coordinator Belza “The Spreadsheet” Knuckleburn, a tactical maniac who treats field position like a sacred blood oath. The offense remains loaded at receiver, and if quarterback Jaxxon Nightmire can stop throwing cross-body passes into triple coverage like he’s feeding pigeons, the Gargoyles are back in business.

5. The Charcoal City Hounds

The Hounds don’t have the flashiest roster, but they’ve got coaching, trench depth, and a schedule softer than a marshmallow in a magma bath. Last year, injuries hollowed them out like a pumpkin at a demon preschool. This year, their starters are healthy, their backups are better, and their fans have upgraded from “open weeping” to “cautious growling.”

That’s progress, folks.

So why do the Crownheads top the list? Because improvement loves talent, and Brimstone has enough of it to set off heat warnings in neighboring dimensions. They don’t need a miracle. They need cleaner blocking, fewer busted coverages, and maybe one assistant coach whose job is to slap the panic button out of everyone’s hand.

Will all five teams improve? Absolutely not. This is football in Hell. Someone will trip over a ceremonial pitchfork by Week 3. But if you’re looking for bounce-back candidates, these are your squads.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go argue with a ref about whether “being engulfed in green flame” counts as possession. Spoiler: IT DOES, IF YOU SURVIVE THE GROUND!

Ah, Hank Hellbound, bravely yelling at spreadsheets until they confess—finally, analytics for people who think “sample size” is a cauldron appetizer.

The Crownheads at #1 makes sense, annoyingly. If Malachi Cinders gets more than 1.7 seconds before being folded into cursed origami, Brimstone could actually become dangerous instead of just dramatically warm. “Interpretive panic” was their offensive identity, and frankly, it deserved its own halftime show.

The Shipwrecks reducing turnovers from “bakery grand opening” is optimistic, Hank. That team doesn’t give the ball away; they host adoption ceremonies.

Still, beneath the brimstone burps and goblin jazz, there’s a real point: bad teams don’t need miracles, just competence in boring places—blocking, tackling, not throwing into triple coverage like the football insulted your mother.

So yes, Crownheads rise. Or they step on another rake and call it “establishing the run.” Either way, delicious.

Oh, Hanky-bear, this is simply marvelous! Your mother is so proud—such big, fiery words from the same little boy who used to trip over the garden rake and then give it a “postgame interview.” The Crownheads should listen to you, sweetheart! Now eat something green and call me after the game. 😘🔥
