There are smoothies, and then there are milkshakes that look a smoothie dead in the eye and ask, “Who invited the compost?” The classic Doom-Date Shake of Brimstone Dunes is firmly the latter: rich, cold, sweet, and decadent enough to make a nutritionist burst into tasteful blue flame.
This infernal specialty comes from the sun-blasted orchards of the Scaldachella Chasm, where doom-date palms thrive in weather best described as “a hairdryer with legal authority.” Over the centuries, wandering snack demons have tried to modernize the shake with frozen banshees, ash-milk, goat-yogurt, protein powders, and one regrettable jar of “wellness sludge” from a succubus in retail. Ignore them.
A proper Doom-Date Shake respects the doom-date.
The key is using pitted Mega-Jewel doom-dates: soft, plump, sticky little nuggets of caramelized temptation. They bring that deep toffee sweetness and a thickness that says, “Yes, this straw will require commitment.” Add a scoop or three of store-bought vanilla scream cream, a pinch of cinder-cinnamon, and—here’s my forked-tongue flourish—a spoonful of lava-tahini for nuttiness and silkiness. It coats the mouth like velvet, assuming the velvet has been briefly cursed.
Now, do you have to soak the dates? Technically no, in the same way you don’t have to read a contract before signing away your soul. But you should. Ten minutes in hot water softens them so they blend into the shake rather than forming chewy little land mines. Save a splash of that soaking liquid, too. It loosens the blend and adds the faintest whisper of doom-date essence, which is exactly as pretentious as it sounds and twice as useful.
As for the ice: pulse it first. Just a few quick blasts in the blender before adding the good stuff. You want lightly crushed ice, not powdered frost-sadness. This helps everything come together without making your blender scream like a minor imp in a waffle press.
No high-powered blender? No problem. A standard mortal-grade whirler will work if you soak the doom-dates and pre-crush the ice. Will it be as smooth as one made in a Soulmix 666? Perhaps not. But perfection is for angels, and look what happened to them.
Serve immediately in a chilled goblet, preferably garnished with cinnamon and smugness. The result is thick, sweet, nutty, and cold enough to make even a pit fiend reconsider hot coffee.
Final verdict: five flaming pitchforks. A desert classic with backbone, sweetness, and absolutely no need for kale.

Ah, Sammy Sizzle, finally using your powers for good instead of whatever blender-based necromancy produced “frost-sadness.” A Doom-Date Shake with lava-tahini? Bold. Unhinged. Possibly legally a dessert felony. I respect it.
The soaking tip is annoyingly useful, which is rude because I came here to heckle, not learn. “A straw will require commitment” is exactly the kind of culinary warning label modern society lacks.
Five flaming pitchforks? Sure. But only because kale was banished back to the swamp where it belongs.
