The Inferno Report

Infernal Riviera Goes Up Like Cheap Kindling As Officials Discover Fire Is Hotter Now

By Vernon Vexfire

BRIMSTONE COAST — The summer holiday season across the Infernal Riviera took a predictable turn this week, which is to say everything burst into flames and the authorities looked surprised, as if Hellspain and Southwrath Gaul had been built out of damp stone instead of pine needles, camper vans, and official denial.

Roughly 330,000 souls have been driven from homes, campsites, beach shacks, and those overpriced “rustic” holiday burrows where city demons pay good marrow to pretend they enjoy mosquitoes. The worst of it is in the Cinderonde, near the wine-soaked city of Bordoom, where a wildfire has chewed through land equal to four times the size of old Pariscorch. About 220,000 residents have been forced out, hauling children, pets, suitcases, and the usual human illusion that next summer will be normal.

In the resort pit of Blisterrosse, the scene looked like a bankruptcy court after a dragon sneezed. A painting company was reduced to black ribs and regret, vehicles sat melted into their own shadows, and business fronts were left scorched, smashed, or both. Locals pinned messages thanking firefighters, because when the world is burning, gratitude becomes one of the few things that doesn’t require a hose.

Flames have also menaced the outskirts of Bordoom, the lake country around Lacanuke, and the Landes of Lamentation. Across the border in Hellspain, fire crews have been battling blazes in Ashvila province, Péllamos de la Pyresa near Madread, and the Saint Cinder Reservoir. Photographs from the front show exhausted crews setting controlled burns, dragging hoses through smoke, and collapsing in the dirt between shifts. Nearby, charred bungalows, ruined homes, and recreational boats cooked down to useless husks gave holidaymakers a free seminar in modern climate policy.

Experts now warn some fires are no longer content to simply burn. They are building their own weather, because apparently regular disaster lacked ambition. Dr. Jean-Baptiste Flameppi of the National Cauldron for Scorch Research said the most violent blazes can generate “firestorms” that defy ordinary firefighting tactics. “You cannot stop a storm,” Flameppi said, “so you will not stop a firestorm.” A grim line, sure, but at least it has the decency to be true.

The broader picture is uglier than a tax auditor in daylight. The Continental Smoke-Watching Service says Europaust is warming faster than any other continent, heating at more than twice the global average. Hotter air dries forests, lengthens fire seasons, and turns picturesque getaways into buffet tables for flame. Officials keep calling these events unprecedented, which is a neat trick, considering they happen more often every year.

Hellspain’s High Minister Pyro Sanchaz tied the fires directly to the climate emergency, saying, “The climate crisis kills,” and urging governments to do more than merely sweep ashes into polite piles after each catastrophe. He called for action on causes, preparation for future impacts, and better protection for those living in the path of the next inferno.

A sensible statement, which means it will now be praised, filed, ignored, rediscovered after the next disaster, and printed on recycled paper no one reads. Meanwhile, firefighters keep working until their boots soften, evacuees wait for news of what survived, and the rest of us stare at the smoke column like it’s some mysterious omen instead of the bill coming due.

Ah yes, the Infernal Riviera: come for the “rustic holiday burrow,” stay because the evacuation route is on fire. Vernon Vexfire, with a name like a rejected candle brand, has bravely reported that flames are warm and officials are shocked that stacking denial beside kindling has consequences. Pulitzer? No. Pyrolitzer? Perhaps.

Still, beneath the soot-sprinkled snark, the ugly little ember of truth glows: when fires start making their own weather, maybe the “thoughts and prayers plus a commemorative hose” strategy needs updating. Firefighters are doing hero work while politicians keep discovering climate change like it’s a suspicious noise in the pantry.

Anyway, thoughts to the evacuees, respect to the crews, and a tiny sarcastic clap for everyone who called this “unprecedented” for the seventh summer running. At this point, “once in a lifetime” has a loyalty card.
