By Hank Hellbound, reporting live from the scorch marks on the touchline.
Folks, the Underworld Cup has ended, the lava sprinklers are off, and the last ref has been safely chased into a volcano by both sets of supporters. That means it’s time for the sacred tradition every true sports goblin loves: naming the tournament’s Best XI and Most Disappointing XI.
And let me tell you, I’ve seen cleaner tackles in a demon stampede.
**BEST XI: The Brimstone Ballers**
**GK: Ash “Iron Claws” Cindervein, Nethergloom**
This keeper had more hands than a cursed casino dealer. He saved penalties, free kicks, reputations, and at one point what appeared to be a flaming anvil from the upper deck. Nethergloom only conceded twice, and one of those was technically a haunting.
**RB: Skarn Fangwhistle, Blisterwick**
A fullback with lungs like bellows and tackles like tax audits. Skarn ran the flank so hard the grass filed a workplace complaint.
**CB: Gorruk Blackshinguard, Moltenovia**
Big, mean, elegant in the way a collapsing cathedral is elegant. Won every aerial duel and several arguments with physics.
**CB: Vex Marrowpost, Sulfuria**
The tournament’s calmest defender, which is impressive considering his eyes are always on fire. Read the game beautifully, then set the book ablaze.
**LB: Nib “The Sizzle” Clovenboot, Scorchmark Isles**
Tiny? Yes. Terrifying? Also yes. Nib overlapped like a bat out of a paperwork department and delivered crosses so sharp they needed warning labels.
**CM: Belzaro Driftspike, Abyssal United**
A midfield general. A conductor. A tyrant in shin pads. Belzaro controlled tempo like he owned a metronome made of bones.
**CM: Krakka Doomlace, Charcoal Coast**
Every team needs a player who does the dirty work. Krakka did the dirty work, the filthy work, and three jobs OSHA refuses to classify.
**AM: Sable Hexfoot, Pandemonia**
Pure magic. Mostly legal. Sable’s through balls split defenses like gossip at a family barbecue in the seventh circle.
**RW: Zizzik Embertoes, Flamehollow**
Fastest player in the tournament. I clocked him at “where did he go?” per hour. Left defenders spinning like cursed ceiling fans.
**LW: Maldra Screamsilk, Lake of Fire Athletic**
Stylish, ruthless, and somehow always photographed mid-hair flip. Scored four, assisted five, and emotionally destroyed every right back she faced.
**ST: Throg “Goal Furnace” Helligan, Doomchester**
The golden boot winner and a personal favorite of mine. Built like a siege engine, finished like a poet, celebrated like a man banned from furniture stores.
**MOST DISAPPOINTING XI: The Pitchfork Pretenders**
Now listen, I say this with love. Brutal, smoking, horn-polishing love.
**GK: Ploop Snarehands, Misery Bay**
Ploop came in highly rated and left looking like he’d been assembled during a fire drill. His gloves had all the grip of buttered eels.
**RB: Drindle Ashpants, Craterford**
Caught out of position so often local cartographers gave him his own dotted line.
**CB: Borvax Lumpwall, Screechia**
A defender described as “unmovable,” which turned out to mean “unable to turn.”
**CB: Melkorr Oopsfang, Red Pit Republic**
Scored two own goals and nearly completed the hat trick by clearing a ball into his own soul.
**LB: Gribba Charflap, Hadeshire**
Every winger treated Gribba like a revolving door with boots. Tough tournament. Tougher viewing.
**CM: Fizznark Sulkchain, Dreadmere**
Supposed to dictate play. Instead dictated several apologies to the bench.
**CM: Orox Mudspindle, Cindersburg**
Had one completed pass, and it was during warmups. To a mascot. From another match.
**AM: Velvet Doomwhiff, Tartarus Town**
Arrived with hype, left with a heat rash. Couldn’t unlock a defense if handed a skeleton key and a signed confession.
**RW: Snazzle Blisterpop, Infernal Rovers**
All tricks, no end product. A highlight reel made entirely of stepovers into throw-ins.
**LW: Drazmina Woefern, Gloomspire**
Spent the tournament cutting inside, then cutting inside again, then discovering there was no field left.
**ST: Bunk “The Bonfire” Nostrildoom, Ashen Vale**
Zero goals, zero assists, seven dramatic looks at the sky. Brother, the sky wasn’t marking you.
So there it is, scorch fans: the blessed, the busted, and the beautifully bewildering. The Underworld Cup gave us glory, heartbreak, and at least one linesman who may still be hiding inside a cauldron.
Until next time, keep your boots hot, your elbows legal, and your celebrations under the “felony pyrotechnics” threshold. Hank Hellbound, signing off!
Ah, Hank Hellbound, once again bravely reporting from the touchline like a man who thinks “scorch marks” count as journalism credentials. Still, credit where it’s due: this XI is hotter than a devil’s kettle and only slightly less chaotic than your sentence structure.
Ash Cindervein saving a flaming anvil? Finally, a keeper with better hands than Hank has metaphors. And poor Bunk Nostrildoom staring at the sky—classic striker behavior. When in doubt, blame gravity, weather, or divine marking.
The real cursed XI, though, might be any team trusting “buttered eels” Ploop in goal. That’s not a keeper, that’s a wet apology with gloves.
Annoyingly solid list, Hank. Don’t let it go to your horns.
Oh Hanky-bear, this is just marvelous! Your Best XI had me cheering and your Pitchfork Pretenders had me cackling into my tea. Such colorful writing—just like when you were a little imp narrating sock-puppet matches in the laundry basket. So proud of you, sweetheart! Wear your knee brace and call your mother. 😘
