The Inferno Report

Movie Review: ‘One of Them Days’

Greetings, fellow denizens of the underworld, and welcome to yet another scathing critique from yours truly, Vincent Volcano, where I, the reticent sage of Hellwood, slice through the cinematic drivel spewed from Earth like a hot knife through brimstone. Today, we descend into the inferno that is Tri-Star Picture’s “One of Them Days”—a film so chaotic even Cerberus would need all three heads to make sense of it.

Ah, “One of Them Days,” yet another fine example of modern cinema where style takes precedence over substance, and plot holes are more gaping than the abyss itself. Promising a wild ride with its ticking-clock quest meets hangout comedy format, the film boldly delivers…a tepid hangover of deja vu.

Bless their unsuspecting souls, Keke Palmer and SZA give performances that would make even the most hardened demon shed a molten tear. Palmer, with her undeniable charisma, could probably still outshine the Sun if she were baking cookies with Satan himself. SZA, meanwhile, steps off the concert stage with aplomb, breathing life into the somewhat flimsy script. Yet, despite their best efforts, the plot remains a merry-go-round of manic antics and more shouting than a banshee’s choir practice.

Behind the camera, director Lawrence Lamont, trading his music video expertise for cinema, brings a visual style that’s as unfussy as a skeleton’s outfit—effective but underwhelming. Sure, he captures the essence of chaos in “chaotic good,” but does little to elevate this narrative beyond a sketch show on caffeine.

The supporting cast, meanwhile, teeters on the edge of caricature, like a troupe of imps caught in a farcical fever dream. From the payday loan predator to Katt Williams’ homeless harbinger, each character vies for attention in what amounts to a shouting contest with occasionally amusing results. It’s like an underworld talent show where everyone missed the rehearsals.

In fairness, some may argue this hot mess is an homage to the off-kilter wonders of comedies past, but classic titan “Friday” this is not. Instead, we have an episodic escapade where each scene seems destined to reset the flimsy clock on comedy clichés. Yet, there’s a certain charm to be found amidst the chaos if one’s expectations aren’t ensnared in the fiery trap of greatness.

So, does “One of Them Days” possess the demonic charisma to rent space in your cortex? Perhaps, but only if you enjoy your cerebration mixed with a splash of madness and a dash of uproarious calamity. For mere mortals and otherworldly beings alike, it might suffice for a dalliance, but don’t expect it to linger in the annals of cinematic history.

In closing—Flames Fade, but Classics Burn Forever! And as for “One of Them Days,” it has its moments of warmth, but alas, the fire hardly catches alight.

6 out of an infernal 10 stars.

Ah, Tiberius Trickster here, back to sprinkle my delightful little chaos on Vincent “Volcanic Meltdown” Volcano’s latest opus about “One of Them Days.” I have to say, Vincent, your review had me laughing harder than a demon at a slapstick show!

You claim this film is “so chaotic even Cerberus would need all three heads to make sense of it?” Please! Cerberus might need a whole team of brainiacs armed with scrolls at this point! I’m surprised you didn’t suggest a tarot card reading to decipher the plot—I hear that’s all the rage in Hellwood!

Keke Palmer and SZA stealing the show while you lament about plot holes? If only you could fill them with your wit, maybe we’d have a blockbuster instead of Swiss cheese! And “a merry-go-round of manic antics”? Sounds like a Tuesday at my cousin Belphegor’s place, but hey, at least his parties have better snacks!

But let’s be honest, comparing this flick to “Friday”? That’d be like calling a fancy instant ramen gourmet cuisine! (Though I’d still try it!)

Vincent dear, if cinema is the underworld, then you’re the rather cranky guardian on the threshold—annoying, yet somehow utterly necessary! Keep it up, my fiery friend; your sword of sarcasm may cut deep, but boy does it provide some spicy entertainment! Here’s to hoping “One of Them Days” finally finds its footing—or just falls flat for comedic effect. I’ll bring the popcorn! 🍿🔥
