By Hank Hellbound, former three-time Lava Bowl tailback and current man yelling “RUN THE DANG PITCHFORK SWEEP” at perfectly innocent clouds of sulfur.
Well butter my brimstone and call me blitzed, the Opening Torment did not tiptoe into the season—it kicked down the crypt door wearing flaming cleats.
Across the Lower Leagues, four offenses erupted like a nacho cauldron left too close to the Lake of Fire. We had the Bruinfiends dropping 59 screams on the scoreboard, the Carrion Crows shrieking their way to 41, and two more squads turning defensive coordinators into lightly toasted pudding.
Let’s size ’em up, sinners.
First up: the Pandemonium Bruinfiends. Fifty-nine points! That’s not a football score; that’s a thermostat setting in the employee break room. Quarterfiend Coal “Hot Hands” Gristlejaw looked like he’d swallowed a playbook and washed it down with rocket fuel. The Bruinfiends ran tempo so fast the chain gang filed a workplace hazard complaint. Their receivers were open all day, which in Hell usually means someone forgot to lock the escape hatches.
Was it real? I say mostly yes. The offensive line blocked like five tax attorneys protecting a loophole, and the run game had enough push to move a cathedral into a volcano. My only concern: they were playing the Damp Dungeon Drakes, whose secondary tackled with the enthusiasm of a ghost hugging fog.
Next: the Stygian Carrion Crows, who put up 41 and looked mean doing it. I love a team that treats third-and-long like a personal insult. Their quarterback, Malphas “Moonshot” Blackwing, uncorked deep balls that came down with snow on them—which is illegal down here, but impressive.
The Crows’ new coordinator, Spindle Scratchburn, dialed up misdirection, motion, and one play that appeared to involve three tight ends, a ceremonial gong, and possibly a small betrayal. Delicious stuff. Still, I want to see them do it against a defense that doesn’t confuse “zone coverage” with “everyone stand near the snacks.”
Now let’s talk about the Ashpit Impalers. Thirty-eight points, and every one of them felt like a shovel to the ribs. This was bully-ball with jazz hands. They ran, they play-actioned, they ran again, and by the fourth quarter the opposing linebackers looked like they were trying to remember why they chose sports instead of accounting.
Their rookie running back, Brix “The Furnace” Clobberhoof, is a refrigerator with knees. The kid doesn’t hit holes; he files demolition permits. If he stays healthy, the Impalers can control games, drain clocks, and ruin the afternoons of every fantasy goblin who benched him.
Finally: the Sulfur City Serpents. Ah, the Serpents. Forty-two points of pure chaos. Were they efficient? Not always. Were they disciplined? Buddy, a raccoon in a fireworks store has better structure. But sweet screaming goalposts, were they fun.
Their offense is built around speed, laterals, audacity, and the firm belief that punting is for souls still clinging to hope. Slot demon Zip Vexx caught nine passes, two touchdowns, and one sideline pretzel thrown by a fan. The Serpents may not be sustainable, but neither is a volcano luau, and I’d attend that twice.
So who’s for real?
Bruinfiends: dangerous.
Crows: polished.
Impalers: punishing.
Serpents: a haunted slot machine paying out touchdowns.
Week 1 lies to us every year, folks. It whispers, “This is destiny,” then steals your wallet in Week 3. But as your old pal Hank Hellbound always says: points are points, fire is fire, and if an offense hangs half a hundred before the brimstone nachos get cold, you salute the carnage.
Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m off to rewatch every touchdown while yelling advice nobody requested. That’s called analysis, baby.

Ah, Hank Hellbound, patron saint of yelling at sulfur clouds and mistaking metaphors for cardio, has once again delivered a scouting report that reads like a barbecue menu written during a concussion.
Still, credit where it’s due: the Bruinfiends hanging 59 is less “statement win” and more “the Drakes’ secondary applied for witness protection.” The Crows look polished, sure, but any QB can throw moonballs when the defense is busy forming a snack-based zoning committee.
The real gem here? “Week 1 lies.” Finally, Hank stumbles face-first into wisdom like a drunk imp finding a playbook. These offenses may be infernal fireworks, or they may be pumpkins with shoulder pads by Week 3.
Either way, I’m rooting for the Serpents. Any team that treats punting like a moral failing deserves our chaotic little hearts.
Oh, my sweet Hanky-Panky, what a fiery little masterpiece! 🔥 Mama is so proud of how you measured all those offenses—such big words from the same boy who used to yell “RUN THE DANG PITCHFORK SWEEP” into his cereal spoon at breakfast. You’ve still got that Lava Bowl sparkle, pumpkin. Just remember to rest your voice after all that cloud-yelling! 😘 Love, Mom.
