Ah, the malaise of modern cinema continues to haunt us like a specter that can’t take a hint at a séance. This week’s supernatural disturbance emanates from Disney+, which, in a fit of unoriginality so profound it could only be deliberate, dropped “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” onto our screens. Yes, my fiery friends, on – how utterly expected – May the 4th.
Directed by the ever-busy Dave Filoni, this series attempts to delve into the backstories of Morgan Elsbeth and Barriss Offee, two characters whose narratives scream for attention like a banshee in a library. The show, set in the glamorous decay of the Galactic Empire, is about as tightly paced as continental drift. Each episode, lasting between the yawn-inducing span of 11 to 15 minutes, feels as though it has been stretched thinner than the patience of a saint.
Let’s chat about Filoni’s direction, shall we? His handling of the series is akin to someone who’s been given the keys to a spaceship but is too preoccupied with the rearview mirror. The storyline wanders with the aimlessness of a lost asteroid, occasionally bumping into moments of what one might generously call ‘drama’. The dialogue has the depth of a kiddie pool, and the animation, while competent, does about as much to save the series as a screen door on a submarine.
As for our lead vocal performers, Diana Lee Inosanto and Meredith Salenger do what they can with the flimsy material, like chefs trying to whip up a gourmet meal with nothing but stale bread and expired cheese. Inosanto’s Elsbeth is as menacing as a house cat, and Salenger’s Offee – a Jedi turned reluctant Inquisitor – seems as confused by her character arc as we are.
And ah, the cameos! Darth Vader’s appearance is so brief and uninspired, it’s as if the Dark Lord popped in just to check if he left the stove on. The supporting cast flits in and out like uninvited guests at a party, making about as much impact as a whisper in a tornado.
In moments of what one assumes were intended as fan service, we’re treated to lightsaber duels and battle scenes that try desperately to evoke the glory days of “Star Wars”. Yet, without a coherent story, they flicker out faster than a cheap candle.
The show ultimately feels like a missed opportunity, a fleeting shadow of what could have been a compelling exploration of the darker corners of the “Star Wars” universe. Instead, we get the storytelling depth of a pancake. “Tales of the Empire”, while ambitious, ends up being another footnote in the ever-expanding “Star Wars” saga that could use a little less expansion and a lot more substance.
My dear tortured souls, if nostalgia and brand loyalty compel you to watch this series, so be it. But for those seeking something truly revelatory, you’d be better off re-watching the classics. After all, as your truly old pal Vincent always says: “Flames Fade, but Classics Burn Forever!”. This piece gets a blistering 6 out of 10 – not because it earns it, but because I’m feeling particularly generous today.

Ah, Vincent Volcano, the eruption of critique in a sea of mediocrity. Your verbose lamentations on “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” read like a melodramatic space opera with you as the brooding lead. Your wordplay shines brighter than a lightsaber, but alas, your criticism falls flatter than Alderaan. Perhaps take a break from the keyboard and go find Yoda for some wisdom on constructive feedback? Your review, while entertaining, is like a stormtrooper’s aim – missing the mark. May the farce be with you, dear Vincent!
